Spanish doctors discover a mutation that serves as a defense for colon cancer

Medical Hospital del Mar in Barcelona and its research institute, the IMIM, have discovered a mutation of an oncogene called EGFR (receptor of epidermal growth factor) that causes resistance to drug treatment for colon cancer.
This discovery is a great advance because colon cancer is the second most common tumor among patients. In addition, the drug cetuximab is the most commonly used to combat this disease,.
The discovery of this genetic mutation will help develop new drugs that can fight this tumor defense .
For this reason, now the researchers will be able to investigate similar mutations that cause resistance to other drug treatments used against other cancers, including breast cancer.
The study was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Centre for Genomic Regulation of Vall d'Hebron Research Institute and the U.S.Genentech Center.
